How prepayment actually reduces your interest
A prepayment goes straight against principal. Because interest each month is charged on the balance, removing principal today removes every future month of interest that balance would have generated.

Why timing matters more than size
A ₹1,00,000 prepayment in year 2 of a 20-year loan avoids interest for 18 remaining years. The same ₹1,00,000 in year 18 avoids interest for two. Early rupees are worth several times late rupees.
This is also why the first years of a loan feel unproductive: the balance is high, so most of your instalment is interest. Prepayments are the only fast way through that phase.
Extra every month, on a real loan
About ₹165 a day removes nearly ₹13 lakh of interest and finishes the loan roughly 5 years and 9 months early. On a ₹5,00,000 personal loan at 14% for 4 years, ₹3,000 extra a month saves about ₹36,800 and closes it 10 months early.
| Plan | Closes in | Total interest | Interest saved |
|---|---|---|---|
| EMI only | 240 months | ₹39,23,200 | — |
| EMI + ₹5,000 a month | 171 months | ₹26,26,900 | ₹12,96,200 |
Lump sums and yearly step-ups
- A bonus or maturing deposit applied in the first third of the tenure is the single most effective move available to most borrowers.
- Raising your EMI by about 5% each year alongside your salary is barely felt month to month and shortens a long loan substantially.
- One extra instalment a year — a 13th EMI — is an easy habit and still makes a visible dent in a 20-year loan.
Charges and rules to check first
For floating-rate loans taken by individuals for non-business purposes, RBI rules do not permit foreclosure or prepayment penalties. Fixed-rate loans, and many business loans, can carry a charge, often 2–4% of the amount prepaid plus GST.
Confirm three things with your lender in writing: whether a charge applies, whether the prepayment reduces tenure or EMI by default, and how soon the reduction reflects in your schedule. Ask for a revised amortisation statement afterwards and check it.
Before you prepay at all
- Clear costlier debt first. Prepaying a 9% home loan while carrying a 36% credit-card balance loses money.
- Keep an emergency buffer. Money paid into a loan is hard to get back.
- Compare the loan rate with a genuinely safe return after tax. Prepaying is a guaranteed saving at your loan rate, which is hard to beat safely.
Plan it with your own figures
The prepayment planner simulates extra monthly payments, yearly EMI increases, repeating part payments, one-time lump sums and a balance transfer — individually and in combination — and ranks them by what you actually save after fees.
Frequently asked questions
- Should prepayment reduce my EMI or my tenure?
- Reducing the tenure saves far more interest, because the higher instalment keeps working. Reducing the EMI helps cash flow instead. See the dedicated guide for the numbers.
- Is there a best month to prepay?
- Prepay as soon as the money is available, ideally right after an instalment is debited so the lower balance applies to the next interest calculation.
